| Can you imagine spending 2 whole years in a wheel chair? I couldn't either, but at the tender age of 4 years old I, after experiencing severe and debilitating left hip pain, was placed in a wheel chair. My parents were going through a bitter divorce and my body was letting me down in the ultimate way to a boy. I was told I had Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, a blood supply problem to the head of my femur bone. As a result it had started wearing away and was causing me pain and difficulty walking. | The period of time in the wheel chair was very difficult for me. There is a social stigma being associated with being in a wheel chair and the school I attended (in Copenhagen, Denmark) promptly installed handicap toilets and a massive ramp to make sure I could get where I was going. I was picked up and dropped home from school each day in a taxi as I couldn't walk like the other kids.
| | At school the result was me sitting for hours starring into space – while my friends were running around outside having fun. | | The worst part was going to the hospital after 2 years and having another series of x-rays attended directly at my pelvis and then being told that although it was OK for me to come out of the wheel chair, the bad news was that according to the doctors at the hospital, I would be back in the wheel chair at age 30 with severe arthritis and to pack me in cotton wool so to speak. I was to avoid all contact sport or anything too vigorous. | | At age 11 my family moved back to Australia where Mum is from and it was here that fortune took a turn for the better. Whilst in Denmark, my aunt and uncle, Judy and John Hinwood, had been trained as Doctors of Chiropractic in Canada and within days I was under expert Chiropractic Care. I remember spending many an afternoon at their centre at Underwood, a suburb of Brisbane in Queensland. But it started paying off. Soon my hip aches that I had long suffered began to diminish and then disappear and before long I began to regain full function of my bad left leg and my pain disappeared. I was told by my Chiropractors, that I could commence playing whatever sport I wanted and became, during my last year of under 15's, the Queensland Table Tennis Champion .I was rewarded by being given a sports scholarship of several months training with The Korean National Table Tennis Team at their compound outside Seoul. By the end of High School, I received honors as one of the top sports persons in a School of 2000 students. This was truly a miracle for me. | I write now having recently celebrated my 37th birthday. I still to this day have weekly Chiropractic Care and have ended up with none of the problems the doctors foresaw 31 years ago in Denmark, enjoying exceptionally good health. I was so impressed with my results through Chiropractic that I too choose Chiropractic as a profession and so the story continues as I'm able also to touch people of all walks of life and God willing, have a positive effect on their lives.
| | My sincerest thankyou goes to my aunt and uncle, Drs. Hinwood, for their perseverance in helping me get over my terrible debilitating problem and being wonderful role models and leading the way for me too to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. |
